Legends Football '98

Flag on the Play
While the box cover portrays the look of the game accurately, it neglects to mention an important fact: a minimum install requires 180MB of free disk space while a typical install requires 375MB. The actual amount of space taken varies, but no matter how you slice it, this game requires a substantial investment in digital real estate.

Part of that space is taken up by a standalone play editor, which is high quality but not quite on par with my favorite from Front PageLegends Football '98 Sports: Football Pro. Players can be assigned over 20 standard actions, but I usually create a few unusual plays to run a new editor through its paces. Legends allows for one of my favorites (the direct snap to the halfback), but I wasn't able to re-create another favorite of mine--a quick backward pass to a wide receiver who then forward passes to the quarterback. Regardless, the play editor is very comprehensive, intuitive, and a nice extra.

The Kick Is Up
One extra that isn't included is multiplayer networking. Only a few football games currently have the ability to play using more than one computer, but this should become commonplace in the near future. Football is definitely a game that benefits from different angles, both offensively and defensively, and it is always more challenging when players can't peek at their opponent's playbook.

For those who have the hard drive space and a Gravis Gamepad, Legends '98 Football is as good as anything produced in 1997. However, this is the first game of 1998, and it will be some time before the MVP is chosen. Legends is a solid game with the unique ability to play seasons from the past--true retro-gaming. The arcade fanatic looking for eye candy might want to pass on this game, while the football historian should tackle it with both hands. The average player looking for a good balance of features should put Legends on their reserve list, and perhaps bring it out later in the season--just in case the other players don't make the cut.

If you like this type of game, you might want to check out Front Page Sports: Football Pro '97 or Madden 97.

Tips
-Buy a Gravis Gamepad.
-Use the F2 and F3 keys to set the camera as low and wide as possible. You won't be able to see all of your players, but you can come close.
-Passing is more difficult in Legends than in many football games. For this reason, a pressure-oriented, gambling defense works well (like in the real NFL). To blitz successfully, make sure you rush one more defender than the offensive line can handle.
